HIV/AIDS
Currently CARE works with local communities and organisations in both countries to prevent HIV/AIDS and strengthen healthcare provision for those affected. We raise awareness about testing and counselling services and build on local and homebased care. We also offer support to caregivers.
Migrant workers - such as truck drivers - are among the most vulnerable to the spread of HIV as they travel between South Africa and Lesotho and are often away from home for long periods.
We tackle the problem by educating truck drivers and sex workers about the spread of HIV and how to protect themselves.
Getting people’s voices heard.
CARE provides training and support to local organisations which help people to get their voices heard. We assist groups in developing strategies to enable them to take people’s voices to policy makers.
Economic empowerment
CARE supports poor families to run highly effective village loans and savings groups. These community organised small loans and savings groups help individuals to start small businesses, and lead to better health, nutrition and longer education for children. Women are particularly encouraged to take part, which increases their participation in public life. Decisions on how to use the funds rest with members themselves.
National Resources
CARE is exploring ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change, such as drought, floods and soil degradation. This includes potential partnerships with academic institutions in the future.
