CARE was one of the first international aid agencies to work in Nepal.
Today, CARE Nepal works to address the causes of poverty and social injustice, such as discrimination, conflict and natural disasters.
We focus on three areas: empowering women; making livelihoods more secure; and working towards equality and social justice.
Women’s Empowerment
CARE is involved with a number of national, regional and local networks to prevent sexual and gender-based violence. CARE is also striving to ensure that Nepal’s new political constitution (which is being drafted) includes women’s rights issues.
Health
CARE works to increase access to health services, encourage people to seek timely and appropriate medical care and build the capabilities of local health services.
CARE trains community health workers to promote childhood immunisation, educate women on breastfeeding, and to combat diarrhoea.
CARE coordinates with national networks and the Government, raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
We provide information in rural communities and support hospitals to establish voluntary counselling and testing centres.
Education
CARE provides literacy programs for adults and out-of-school young people, many of them women. We provide scholarships to poor and socially excluded children and work to improve school buildings and facilities.
Emergency Response and Disaster Risk Reduction
Nepal is prone to floods, landslides and earthquakes. CARE works with communities to develop disaster risk reduction, first aid and rescue committees and raises public awareness on disaster preparedness. We help communities develop contingency plans against floods and landslides.
