We began work in Guatemala nearly fifty years ago with a school-feeding project and shortly afterwards we started a mother and child health project.
Our work in Guatemala today focuses on improving the living conditions of poor and marginalised populations, especially indigenous groups.
CARE in action:
Strengthening democracy, governance and social inclusion
CARE supports local organisations in the western highlands of Guatemala interested in participating in and leading the democratic and development processes in their communities.
Support includes obtaining legal status for local organisations, legal status of community members (many of whom, during the civil war, lost their identity documents), and becoming familiar with the content and application of laws and frameworks that influence the democracy and development processes.
Helping children get a good education
CARE works to increase the attendance of girls at primary school. Mothers are able to access micro-credit to sustain and expand their economic activities which contributes to increased household income and to freeing up girls so they can attend school.
We also collaborate with the Ministry of Education and local Parent-Teacher Associations to develop an appropriate bi-lingual, multi-cultural curriculum and strengthen the overall quality of primary education.
