CARE and Cadbury

When talking about private sector partnerships CARE’s foremost partnership is with the poor, working to improve their ability to access assets, skills, capital, services and markets.

At the other end of the value chain we recognise that big business has an impact on and responsibility towards the poor.

It is important that this is used positively as companies can promote and protect – or abuse – the rights of their workforce, the communities and environment in which they operate and the public they serve.

The Cadbury’s Cocoa Partnership is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to secure the economic, social and environmental sustainability of around a million cocoa farmers and their communities in Ghana, India, Indonesia and the Caribbean.

CARE have been working with cocoa communities for a long time but recognises that the challenge is too big in isolation and we welcome this opportunity to collaborate with other key actors (companies, governments, labour organisations and other parts of civil society) across the cocoa value chain.

We hope the Cadbury’s Cocoa Partnership will have a greater, lasting impact on the lives and livelihoods of communities in Ghana.
