CARE in Bulgaria

CARE first worked in Bulgaria in 1946 and 1947, after World War II, when we delivered humanitarian aid to the Bulgarian population in the form of the famous ‘CARE packages’.

In Bulgaria we:
  • support vocational training for the unemployed
  • improve the quality of life of disabled children and young adults
  • improve education services

We returned to Bulgaria in 1990 and established our office in Sofia in 1997 and now we touch the lives of the most vulnerable and marginalised social groups in the country. We work with children and families at risk, children with disabilities and their families, and with victims of human trafficking and drug abuse, as well as with the minority Roma communities.

CARE in action:

Unemployment and training
Unemployment is especially high among ethnic minority groups and people with disabilities. We are working to ensure that marginalised groups in Bulgaria have access to high-quality vocational training. We are working to improve vocational training by modernising vocational schools and training teachers to work with disadvantaged young people, people with disabilities and minority groups. We also aim to support closer cooperation between vocational schools and employers.

Helping children with disabilities
We aim to improve the quality of life of children with disabilities who live in traditional institutions – such as orphanages or children’s homes. We are working with these institutions to retrain staff and integrate the children into the community, for example by enabling them to attend mainstream schools and kindergartens.
